Quick recap: In 1940, Superman Co-Creator Jerry Siegel wrote a 26 page script in which many historic firsts would have taken place, including Lois learning the nature of Superman's dual identity. The story was illustrated by the Joe Shuster studio; but it was never published.
In 1988, the lost and forgotten script was discovered by Mark Waid who wrote an extensive article explaining the details of his discovery. He also included a complete plot synopsis along with some lines of the dialogue.
In 2003, building on the scholarship of Will Murray, Superman Through the Ages! made available on this website, the only known surviving material. This consisted of eight pages (out of the full twenty-six) of poorly reproduced original artwork, and a handful of script excerpts. I also included a request for anyone who had any more artwork from the lost story to contribute it.
From there, the effort grew.First, I was approached by artist Angel Criado, who had seen the material on the site and was inspired to try to reconstruct a complete script extrapolating the missing elements based on the limited artwork known and the limited script excerpts we had available.
Others contacted me soon after. Additional artists who wanted to redraw the poor photcopies into something more professional looking, and one party who had obtained a copy of the long-lost, complete script. >Having the real script in hand elevated the project from merely being a fan effort to something much bigger. Additional artists came on board, and formerly lost pages of the original artwork were uncovered and also contributed, expanding the selection we had from which to work. This website became the default repository for anyone who ever found any part of the K-Metal story.
Now, after 22 years since the K-Metal restoration project began as a mere dream, we have finally completed the last outstanding page!
And I think it very fitting that the artist who first got the dream moving all those years ago and did the first pieces of artwork should be the same artist to do the last piece.
For now.
